Screen Australia today announced almost $133,000 in support for four short film productions through its Short Film Completion Fund. The films are in various stages of post-production and this support will ensure the projects are completed to a high standard ready to be launched on the world festival stage.

Among the projects is writer and director Sophie Miller’s poignant film Spine, starring Snowtown’s Lucas Pittaway, which depicts a dramatic event that brings acceptance to someone who has recently become a quadriplegic. Spine is being produced by Sheila Jayadev with executive producer Prue Williams.

Writer and director Scott Pickett’s The One Who Broke Your Heart (also with writer Luke Tierney and producers Bruce Dawson and Lawrence Lim) and writer and director Alexandra Schepisi’s Lois, starring Jacki Weaver, both have distinctly different takes on a person’s response to a relationship they long to revisit. Lois is produced by Rachel Higgins.

Writer and director Lynne Vincent McCarthy’s first short film Strange Face, with producer Samantha Jennings, takes the viewer into the world of a socially awkward girl who longs for a friend.

“This year we had some really strong submissions for completion funding,” said Screen Australia’s Head of Development Martha Coleman. “Filmmakers are getting out there by whatever means they have and are creating some amazing work. We’re always excited at the discovery of new talent and these filmmakers have the potential to make a significant mark on our future industry.”
